Fredonia Jazz Ensemble (FJE)

Photo of Fredonia Jazz EnsembleOrganized as a dance band at the Fredonia Normal School in 1934, the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble has been one of the premiere ensembles at SUNY Fredonia. Unique to this ensemble is its status as a “student-run” group; meaning that the band is comprised of and directed by students. One of the main tenets of the “FJE” is to further the understanding and enjoyment of big band music through educational outreach concerts and clinics. Frequently guest artists are invited to work with the ensemble and provide clinics and performances free to the public.

Coming off their latest release “Still Kickin’” (2009 Mark Records) the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble has been invited to perform at the Porthcawl International Jazz Festival in Wales, UK during April 2010. The most recent of the ensemble’s nine studio albums, “Still Kickin’” incorporates compositions by FJE members and features a collaborative performance with SUNY Fredonia Chair of Jazz Studies, Bruce Johnstone.

Wherever you catch FJE, one thing is for sure, you won’t leave the concert without a smile on your face.
