NYSBDA Supports Study on Bioaerosal Emissions – A Scientific Roadmap for a Safe Return from COVID-19

The New York State Band Directors Association’s executive board has voted to contribute $5000 in support of a research study being led by scientists at University of Colorado- Boulder for the purpose of gathering scientific data and facts relevant to COVID-19 and arts education. The study is entitled “Reducing Bioaerosol Emissions and Exposures in the Performing Arts: A Scientific Roadmap for a Safe Return from COVID-19.”

The results of the study should allow us to:
1) Have a better understanding of what is actually permissible, safe, and possible in terms of in-person arts education
2) Share information with administrators and communities as to what is actually permissible, safe, and possible in terms of in-person arts education
3) Formulate guidelines, parameters, and mitigation strategies in order to create plans for in-person arts education in the coming year
4) Create and share curricular options based on those parameters and strategies

Initial findings should be available in approximately seven weeks with additional data to be shared in fourteen weeks.

A replication study will also take place at the University of Maryland.  NYSBDA is proud to participate in this study.

NYSBDA will also be collecting donation from individual members to supplement our contribution.  All money donated will be send directly to the team at the University of Colorado- Boulder in support of the study.
